Founders Red Frank Courtney Nicodemus 2021 Red Wine, NV
2021 Red Wine – Napa Valley
The fourth wine in the Founders’ Series honors Brother Frank Courtney Nicodemus. Born in 1853, Founder Nicodemus attended James Kinnier’s Academy in Baltimore alongside Founder Rogers before continuing his education at the University of Virginia. He, along with Founders McCormick and Rogers, all resided in Baltimore, Maryland, and shared a close friendship. A devoted family man, Nicodemus left UVA in the spring of 1870 to join his father in business. Together, they established an investment and brokerage firm, J. C. Nicodemus & Son, in 1874. Within a decade, he launched his own venture, F. C. Nicodemus & Co., specializing in the manufacture of boilers, engines, and machinery. Nicodemus was married twice. His first marriage, to Mary Field Weeks, produced four children. After her passing in 1891, he married Florence B. Smith. In 2007, his great-grandson, Charles Kuhn Nicodemus, continued his legacy by serving as the special initiate at the opening of the Kappa Sigma International Headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Edmund Law Rogers, Jr.
2020 Red Wine – Napa Valley
The third of the Founders’ Series wines is named for Brother Edmund Law Rogers, Jr. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 1, 1950, Founder Rogers was a friend and classmate of Founder Nicodemus before attending the University of Virginia in 1869. A resident of Gildersleeve Cottage along with Brother George L. Thomas, they would host many meetings of the early days at the unofficial Kappa Sigma headquarters off the lawn. Founder Rogers succeeded Founder McCormick as Grand Master of the Zeta Chapter in 1871 upon the latter’s departure from The University. “Kindly, polished, full of humor, he was a citizen of the world who loved the world”. He studied architecture, but Founder Rogers was foremost an artist. His passion for life extended to the stage where he could act, “free from personal anxieties and cares, thoroughly enjoying the life behind the footlights.” Founder Rogers took the stage name Leslie Edmunds and would enjoy a successful life acting, eventually starring in The Octoroon in New York. His artistic skill is well known in the Fraternity in the design of the Kappa Sigma Badge in 1869. He later married Anna Carleton and continued to act until his death in New York City on December 19, 1893.
We introduce you to Edmund Law Rogers, Jr. Our proprietary red blend always exhibits the craft of blending, where all the parts complement the round character of the final wine. Deep dark saturated color, with spicy plum and black cherry, tobacco, cinnamon, and floral and camphor hints on the nose while on the palate it is voluptuous, dark fruited, juicy, round and long lasting with currant, dark chocolate, roasted beets and a persistent finish in this full-bodied wine.

Stella e Mezzaluna
2021 Chardonnay – Napa Valley
The Badge of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, as designed by Founder Edmund Law Rogers, Jr., exists today much the same as it did when it was first created in 1869. Convex in shape bearing a five-pointed star circumscribed by a crescent moon, the first badge was crafted by Sadtler & Sons of Baltimore, Maryland and was worn on The Lawn at the University of Virginia in early 1870. In its original form, white enamel was used to outline the letters Kappa and Sigma. Later black enamel was adopted and is still used in badges produced today. The Keys, Skull & Crossbones, and Swords represent subtle teachings of Kappa Sigma as known to all true and lawful members. Precious jewels were added to further enhance the Star & Crescent as well as convey more historical significance and clues as to its origin. Symbolism is present throughout the design, a testament to the skill and artistry of Founder Rogers.
We introduce you to Stella e Mezzaluna. Balancing the fullness of fruit with the dance of elegance, this 2021 Chardonnay Napa Valley exhibits purity of fruit with melon and poached pear, then lemon custard and faint toastiness on the nose while exotic fruit notes of mango and pineapple mesh with the vanilla and spicy wood from French oak in this medium bodied wine that finishes on a sweet note.
