Founders Red - Frank Courtney Nicodemus - 2021 Red Wine - Napa Valley

The fourth wine in the Founders’ Series honors Brother Frank Courtney Nicodemus. Born in 1853, Founder Nicodemus attended James Kinnier’s Academy in Baltimore alongside Founder Rogers before continuing his education at the University of Virginia. He, along with Founders McCormick and Rogers, all resided in Baltimore, Maryland, and shared a close friendship. A devoted family man, Nicodemus left UVA in the spring of 1870 to join his father in business. Together, they established an investment and brokerage firm, J. C. Nicodemus & Son, in 1874. Within a decade, he launched his own venture, F. C. Nicodemus & Co., specializing in the manufacture of boilers, engines, and machinery. Nicodemus was married twice. His first marriage, to Mary Field Weeks, produced four children. After her passing in 1891, he married Florence B. Smith. In 2007, his great-grandson, Charles Kuhn Nicodemus, continued his legacy by serving as the special initiate at the opening of the Kappa Sigma International Headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Beautiful dark color from a concentrated vintage, this wine leads out with brooding dark fruit aromas of black cherry, blackberries and baking spices with some underlying clay earth and toasty oak. The palate dances with bright fruits that turn darker with time in this full-bodied wine, which is juicy and approachable now, but will also reveal other nuances with age, especially coming from a deep and heralded vintage.
